Last year it was about $420,000.  It is difficult to say for this year until we reach the end.  Most of the other school districts have seen sharp increases in their cyber charter enrollments.  We have held steady thanks to our own Virtual Academy providing an alternative.  Unfortunately we cannot insist that parents use our cyber school rather than the charter.Cost of the cyber charter $9,500 regular education about $20,000 for special education.  The cost of our virtual academy between $4,500 and $5,000 for a regular education student.

How much do the cyber charter schools cost this year. The pension fund is a major problem, all the state employees including judges profit from it. It is iron clad legislation. It's Government money lets print more. How about pa state dollars.

Another great win for the boys basketball team last Friday night against Oley.  What a terrific atmosphere at our gym.  The student "whiteout" section was loud yet very respectful. Nice job by the players, coaches and students. There are two more regular season games this week, with the last home game on Wednesday against Tulpy. The Berks playoffs begin next Monday.    Keep supporting this team! They are pretty good.

I am not aware of any proposed legislation at this time. The most expensive state mandates are the cyber charters and the fact that nothing has been done to begin to fix the pension system.   While they treated it a little last year they have not made substantive changes.

I agree, Jenny - people must do their own research. I have read the bill in its entirety and believe it will greatly benefit the state and its economy. By increasing the sales tax and personal income tax the state will be able to eliminate nuisance taxes and the property tax. HB 1776 will return homeownership to the taxpayer - no longer will we need to pay 'rent' to our school districts.

Dr. Handler, you speak often about cyber charters: To your knowledge, is there anyone in the legislature willing to sponsor a cyber chater bill similar to the late-Senator O'Pake's? What other unfunded mandates hurt Brandywine? What are the total costs of said mandates? Thank you...

HB1776 has some good features I certainly would favor moving away from the property tax as the funding method for schools. However do not be distracted from the major problem, that of spending. The real issue is getting th legislature to back off mandates that do not help kids, but instead favor the special interests.

Please don't just 'check out' House Bill #1776.   Read it, understand it, make your own conclusion.   Make sure you know where the money is being replaced and ask yourself if it makes sense.   I'm not saying to sign or not sign the petition, but base your decision on your own studies, not on what our Brandywhiners are telling you to do.   A significant change to how we fund our schools is a HUGE issue.   In our attempt to help our schools, we could, in fact, hurt them more (this is why it has taken so long to produce a viable bill).

We need to abolish the property tax and institute county school systems, right to work laws and bring an end to prevailing wage rules... Funding crisis solved.

That being said, why consider joining a school district that is in a terrible situation as well.  I think the bossman should poll the whole district to see their desire not just a few idiots in our special interest groups.

You are capable of reading I am assuming.  Comprehension may be another story.  My post said that an email was send out to the faculty.  Is it possible that teachers at Kutztown live in this community?  Yes.  It didn't say I sent an email to the super..... Trufflehead.

Another truffle head.

No one said that we were merging.  People asked if the board and the administration would look into it.  Handler said yes, he could look into it.  That's it.

You actually wrote an email to the Super in Kutztown asking if we were merging?  You are really doing a bang-up job representing the Brandywine community...

Does Kutztown know we are merging with them?

An email sent to the faculty there stated: "It has never been discussed PERIOD.  End of story."  Right from their super.

Mr. Lowry,  Not to be naive in regards to the cell phone post, where do we stand with next years budget?  Is it too late or can modifications still be made?  Also, what is the status of the teacher contract negotiations?  Thanks!
