Subject: Out of town Graduation Guest
39637 New Subject Score 1
I would like to congratulate the 2010 Class of Brandywine.
I traveled across the state to attend your ceremony and enjoyed the speakers and the enthusiasm of the students and guests. I however, was puzzled by the introductions of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian. It seemed the Salutatorian was recognized for her academics, volunteerism, National Merit Semi-Finalist, Who's Who, etc.
I am aware that the Valedictorian was recognized for his athletics and participation in FBLA
and other activities; however why was he not recognized for being a National Merit Finalist? I also wondered why it was not mentioned that he had gone to the National FBLA Convention in Chicago, and that he is a member of Who's Who. All of that aside, I have never known a student with a combined "Perfect" on the S.A.T.
I have taught High School Biology for over 20 years and therefore, have attended and participated in many graduation ceremonies. I wonder, did the speaker not have all of the information on the Valedictorian…or was it not provided to him?

Carol Volponi welcome to Brandywine Heights.
We need more out of town guest to bring to light these gross errors.
The nightmare in this community continues.
Let me tell you what you will be told
1) Sorry! (not a good enough answer)
2) You are on a need to know basis. (not a good enough answer)
3) Get over it the world doesn't revolve around you. (not a good enough answer)
4) Sorry! (not a good enough answer)
5) Life is full of surprises! (not a good enough answer)
6) Whiner Whiner pants on fire. (not a good enough answer)
7) If you don't like what goes on here move or leave. (not a good enough answer)
8) We here at Brandywine have had a laps of unconsciousness please forgive us. (not a good enough answer)
The list goes on and on and on.
9) Oh another one they won't answer you because you have hit a nerve and no good answer for the omission.
10) They will overwhelmingly overlook your comment because you have not brought up a positive question about them.
But maybe because you were a High School Biology they might give you some credence
Don't mine me my messages go unanswered because I don't have a degree/masters/Dr in front of my name.
Hmm
I will now be called Dr ShamWow!

This one may be off task a bit.

Sour grapes????? You only get introduced as a high school valedictorian once. If the info wasn't provided it is one thing but the district should have a pretty good idea of the students accomplishments and as valedictorian should have had those accomplishments acknowledged. But then again life is not always fair. Just a couple years ago the valedictorian and salutatorian didn't get a chance to even speak because of the loss of power and it was too much trouble for the administration to think on their feet and reschedule.

I agree that ALL of this person's accomplishments should have been announced. This person earned this honor, but what I find strange is how you found this web site to log your comments when you said you traveled acrossed the state to attend. I would think that one, you are local or two, someone else was upset and asked you to post a comment.
Agree, but... on:6/11/2010 11:40:05 AM

Actually, I am the young man's aunt and traveled from Pittsburgh to attend his graduation. I have had this website since I am VERY involved in my nieces and nephews education both in Ohio and Pennsylvania and attend as many activities as I can including athletics, academics, etc. (including traveling to Chicago with him for National FBLA competition). I've always been impressed with the Brandywine district and am disappointed in this oversight. By the way, his parents don't even know I posted this, and I have never posted here before.
And I also think the weather emergency that occured 2 years ago is a little different....human safety is more important. Sometimes natural disasters occur...you get people to safety first!

Seniors fill out a "brag sheet" so when colleges call for recommendations the counselors have a quick and easy reference. Keeping it up to date is their responsibility. Top honors are usually not even decided till a day or two before graduation, when the class is highly competitive. This leaves little time for full FBI style background checks.
As for the other person complaint about the force majeure graduation, safety was the primary concern in the middle of one storm and another wave predicted. Graduation is an event where you can't have a do-over. People travel in from out of town, graduates, teachers have travel work plans that cannot be changed, space has to be reserved. You got one shot at it.

I thought it was strange that the valedictorian didn't have the yellow honor cord. Do they get something else to distinguish them from regular honors?

Even if the Valedictoian was not a member of the National Honor Society, this person earned the honor of being the Valedictoian. GPA of 4.59 speaks for itself. There are many students that have the GPA to be on National Honor Society, but if they are not nominated or voted onto it, they do not get to wear the yellow cord at graduation.

That is just ridiculous! Grrrr another objective decision that only hurts the student! If you earn a 4.59, you should definitely be in NHS! Why are students held to such a higher standard than those that are the mentors/teachers/admins? Therefore, if they mess up, should they lose their tenure? I guess so.

Because the people have given the mentors/teachers/admins to much power to do what they think is best.In the name of educating our children.
Time to wake up. They don't need more money they just need to implement tried and true methods that have worked in the past.
Start thinking before you give these so called expert in education all this power and your hard earned money!

The front page of the Patriot is the perfect example of the joke our school is. Instead of highlighting the many achievements of our very talented students, there is a huge picture of 5 young men posing like morons. The valedictorian focuses on the tragic loss of a fellow student due to risky behavior. Is it any wonder people think this area is joke? Thank you Patriot for portraying our students accurately.

I'm sorry but the picture in the Patriot was after commencement. That was the time the families were taking pictures. If the Patriot can't use any of the other photos they took during commencement, don't blame the students. It was a poor decision made by the Patriot, not our kids. As far as the chanting, that was not the place. There were kids in the graduation class, chanting that were there when it went down and they didn't want Mike back bad enough to call 911at that time. Sorry.
