Subject: Activities Committee Meeting June 3rd 6pm @ BHMS Rules For Posting Printer Friendly Versoin

39615 New Subject Score 4

A proposal is currently on the table to charge an activity fee of $50 to every student in grades 7-12 that wish to participate in extracurricular activities run by the district.  The school board has created a committee to investigate alternate ways of funding other than this fee. The committee consists of board members, community members, administrators, and teachers.

The committee's first meeting will be held this Thursday at 6:00PM at the Middle School. The meeting is opened to the public.

Charge the youth groups who use the faculity for free on the year round basis. I am sure electricity, etc isn't free.

the youth groups are already charged for their big events.  It's difficult enough managing to keep the youth programs afloat, please don't make it impossible.  The youth need these healthy outlets.

So let me get this straight. You're against the youth groups getting a free ride because it is on the taxpayer's dime. So if you charge the youth groups they will just charge more for participating which will wind up costing the parents of our youth more who by the way are taxpayers too. Shifting the tax responsibility around is not a great way of facing our problems. In my opinion the cost of utilities used by the youth groups is negligible anyway. It's not like an entire building is lit it up. Usually the gym and a few hall way lights. Small price to pay to keep our youth off the streets doing something productive rather than destructive.

plus, this is not a free ride.  the youth groups that use these facilities consist of students who have parents who PAY TAXES IN THIS DISTRICT!!!  It's called getting use out of your resources.  The heat is already on (no, they don't turn it off at night), and the use of the lights is negligable.  Like stated before, for events that caused prolonged use, there is a fee charged to the groups.  Keeping the costs reasonable for the families keeps the kids off their video games for a while and off the streets.  It's HEALTHY RECREATION.
Honestly, the community should be utilizing these facilities more.  There should be community exercise classes, community classes.....shame on the school for slamming the door shut on the tax payers.

The HVAC is managed by a control system that sets back the temperature to unoccupied set points, lower or higher temperatures to save energy.

I agree with your other points, but occupying the building during off-hours does raise energy costs.

The unoccupied temp set points really should not be that much different then the normal settings otherwise you waste just as much energy running the system hard to bring it back up (or down depending on season) to the occupied temp settings. I doubt the people using the facilities would notice a few degrees of difference if the settings were to remain on the unoccupied settings.
