Subject: ACTIVE SCHOOL GRANT
39568 New Subject Score 3
School Board? if you can call them that. Conrad Weiser had an event for their Middle School that helped the school get $15,000 in grant monies. What programs do you have in place that would help raise this kind of money. Perhaps you should all visit a Weiser School Board Meeting and learn from them?

Why should someone else do the job they and the administration should be doing? There is money out there. You just have to work to find it and get it.

Sure, I'll do their job. Get real. Hey why should they do any work to find grants and extra cash when they can just up the parking fee or start pay to play. They get the same amount of cash, don't have to raise taxes and don't have to work hard for it. It doesn't affect education per se so they don't have to listen to people bitch about cutting education. It's the easy way out. The only people screwed are the families and students who have to pay more.

Isn't that why we have a school board - why don't you stop your insults and find a way to make a difference. I gave you an outlet why not use it instead of insulting me. All you need to do is open a Reading Eagle newspaper and read all about the grants that are out there....if your not going to try and help the district - step down. We need a school board that is here for everyone not just their own personal gain! I find you all very disgusting - here is a way to give the district $15,000 in free money. How hard is it really. 40 other districts in pa took advantage of this, why didn't we? Perhaps $15,000 is pocket change to some of you, but lets help the average person as much as we can! If it were $1,500 I'd still say lets do it. What is wrong with you people?

Sorry but I don't read the Eagle. Could you be specific about this grant? Have you approached Dr. Handler or any other administrator about this? Have you gone to the board meetings and presented your views? Or do you think everone comes here to get the news?
Speak up, in the right places.

I will once again ask you why the public should do the job of the administrators and school board? Isn't that why they were hired and elected? Should we come and wipe their behinds too? They should just do their damn job rather than waiting for the public to do it or worse yet screwing the families in the district.

I am disheartened to read that people in this school district do not read The Reading Eagle. Do you not read ANY newspaper? If you are reading only The Morning Call, WAKE UP !!! The Morning Call does not over Berks county, although they think they do. There's no coverage of the township meetings, school board meetings, sports, arts, etc or the Berks county schools. If you prefer to be clueless and not read the local paper, why do you feel you're qualified to express an opinion?

!) Its not the school board members job to write grants doubt they even have the authority. 2)This district has a very limited staff. 3) They do apply and receive grant monies. You still haven't answered my question. Have you applied to be on the board and become rich and famous? If you happened to be retired you could sign up for the SMILES prgoram and get paid to apply for grants. Its a public school and you be the public get involved instead of just bitching about everyone else.

A public school is for the public not run by the public although there is a group that doesn't seem to feel that way in this district. The Smiles program? Has any retired person EVER used that? They would have to work instead of getting a handout. I can't apply for the opening due to a conflict of interest. Even if I could I would have a very difficult time working with a group of people that don't put the education of our youth at the top of the list.

Once again, some goober who can't spell...your comments would be of more value, if you take the time to look over them before you hit "submit"...I don't know what initiive means or "whare"....what does that mean? People may be more apt to take in what you write if you make it clear. But then, I guess you would be one of those who would blame the school for not teaching you proper spelling.

AMEN!!! I get tired of getting criticized for being the "spelling police"! But, I'm telling you, people, if you really want to be taken seriously or affect ANY change at all in the district or beyond, you have to be able to spell (or use spellcheck!) and construct a sentence that makes sense!!!! We're not texting here, and there is a difference between "there", "their" and "they're"!!!

I don't see that as a lame excuse. That sounds like someone being honest. Do we really need more people that don't want to work and compromise on things? Although their honesty would be a breath of fresh air, if someone feels they wouldn't be able to be productive then we don't need them.

You really think it is run by the public? Then why do we elect board members? If it was truly run by the public wouldn't we all get a vote on the latest budget and everything else? You're off base. A public school district is not run by the public. It's run by the elected local government called the board of directors, or in our case PICWAC's. People in charge without a clue.

I have read a lot of comments on this blog concerning the school board, school administration, teachers, students and so on. A number of comments have been
articulate, thoughtful and pointed.
However, many have been emotional, off the cuff comments, which don't really do much to move the dialogue forward.
The main theme that runs through all of these postings is a sense of frustration and anger - from either end of the spectrum.
If so many people are so very frustrated and angry about actions taken by the school board and/or administration, why is it that the committee of the whole meetings and school board meetings are so sparsely attended? These are the venues in which topics are discussed, differing points of view aired and clarification provided. Decisions are made at these meetings that impact all of us.
Yes, the school board and administration "run" the district, but believe it or not, they do give the public a chance to voice their opinions. And sometimes, if enough people speak up, the decisions that result are based on input from the public, as well as from the administration and the board members.
If everyone who posts to this blog would attend these meetings and get involved in being a part of the solution, I would expect that the feelings of helplessness, anger and frustration would dissipate very quickly.

With all due respect Christine a few years ago when I spoke up about some things at the board meetings I was accused of being an elderly hater by a certain group of people. Pretty small community to be running around being labeled something you're not. I'm glad you look at things through rose colored glasses, and perhaps if you are successful with you're attempt at getting on the board things will change, but until then I will prefer to harp here anonymously. Quite frankly it seems to get better results anyway.

Your point is well taken. I have sustained some hits already and agree that some here have trouble with objectivity and impulse control. However, there are appropriate ways of advocating for change and for working toward ensuring the schools are the best they can be for our children.
By working through the proper channels and ensuring my voice is heard (as a parent), I think there is a better chance for actually effecting change. If there were more of us participating in person, we would have an even greater chance.
That said, I can respect your reticence based on your past experience.

Because you have another dictator in the superintend position. He runs all the board meetings instead of the board members running them. He should be sitting on the side and when ask to comment he should comment.
When the school board learns to run the meetings then we will have true representation for the people of the school district.
Just a side note this is not the first time this has happened in happy happy Brandywine
School District.
