Subject: High School Curriculum Rules For Posting Printer Friendly Versoin

I was curious if administration has looked at the current high school requirements for graduation and how these requirements align with college course requirements.  In particular, BHHS requires 3.5 years of history, while most colleges, including Lehigh, Penn State, Notre Dame and our state colleges only require 2 units.  It seems that most colleges require 4 units of english, 2 units of history which include US Govt and US History, 2 units of foreign language, 2 or 3 units of science and 3 units of math.  Students can then elect to take other history, science or math classes to make up the additional units.  By aligning high school graduation requirements with college requirements, our students can then take the courses they need in order to prepare them for their post-high school studies.  For example, a student studying sciences could continue to take Chem II and/or Anatomy.  Engineers could take engineering/math/computer classes. Political science majors could take additional history classes. Art majors could take art/graphic classes. Business majors could take business/computer classes. By forcing our students to take units that are not required only limits their preparation for college.

Those college requirements you listed are minimum requirements to get in the door. Take 3 units of math may get you into the University but you would probably need to take a remedial course to be admitted into their college of engineering.

A high school graduate should have a wide background.  Besides a student is lucky when they are a senior to have other that the vaguest clue what they want to study in college. Those that do can increase they knowledge of a chosen field with their electivies.
