I can not blame that kid tonight to be part of a program for all those years, and a talent at it.
To be told a practice was optional and then to have the coach berate her for attending a family function in front of the team when she was not at
the practice. And we wonder why kids feel so cheated and depressed when they give their time and energy. My kid is part of the JV program and I am worried she might quit too. Bobby Please address this misfortune.

Yep...I'm a parent of a JV'er, too, and she's on the verge of quitting, too. When did JV stop being a learning ground for Varsity. Girls just sitting entire games, given no opportunity to even try their hand @ a game situation. Making every practice, giving their hearts, and not even being given a measly 1 or 2 minutes of playing time. Pathetic. I hate to witness the decimation of another basketball program, but looks like we're well on our way. Mr. AD....open your eyes.

Perhaps your little Johnny or Susie are involved in too many things and are unable and committed to give 110% to the team OR are not as good as you may believe. This is not REC anymore. People have been saying for years this is one of the many problems with some of the parent coaches. Sound like you may have had false hopes. This is High School. You have got to be kidding me that no kid should give 110%. Maybe that is the problem more kids should be expected to give 110% at everything they do or don't do it. And giving 110% does not mean that they are still entitled to anything. Some kids are not cut out for certain things. Be it sports or even school work. Not every one is going to be a doctor or a star athlete. But it is a matter of finding the individuals specific nitch.

What I was attempting to address was the context of high school sports, and the coaches need to recognize that there are far more important things that students should be focused on than sports. Lots of Pipe dream types around here. Only a select few will get that LockHaven Sporto Scholarship which is not a full free ride it is tuition only. Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We've all been to those meetings where someone wants over 100%.
How about achieving 103%? Here's a little math that might prove helpful. What makes life 100%?

Applying yourself in athletics can make you a better person too. Responsibility, hard work, dedication, the ability to work as a team and communication are all things that I learned through organized sports back in the day. I still apply those principles at my job every day, 25 years or so later. You sound like the non-athletic type that is jealous of other peoples accomplishments in sports. My real question is do you comprehend anything you read? Obviously comprehension can't be part of your long list of accomplishments you claim to have done. Not once did I say winning was important. Not once. Just your way of trying to twist the story away from what made you look like a fool in the first place. Again I'll ask why do you feel a need to rip someone that has accomplished something? It's likely a student at that. Why would you think athletics is the only way to build responsibility, good work ethics and a standard of excellence? Almost any other school activity can provide this (music, drama, telecomm, acedemics) without the drama and self-centeredness of the jock world. Get real 95% of the working world was not a high school athlete, and probably 99% of the upper echelon of companies big and small never played sports. Talk to me about success.

Good to hear you acknowledge that studies are more important than athletics. That has been the crux of the whole argument here. Those who place the emphasis on athletics do a disservice to our children, and those who assume that a winning record in sports automatically leads to success in life are also sadly mistaken. It is not how many games you win or lose, but how you win or lose... one's cooperation, drive, effort, sense of fair play, humility in victory, and continued resolve in defeat. These lessons can be learned from many fields of endeavor, not just in sports, and one's involvement with family, friends, church, school, etc. should not be sacrificed for play.

Wow. I find it amusing how biased you are for someone who purports to be so enlightened. Someone must have really done a number on you as a child.
Everyone is a combination of genetic abilities and life lessons. People gravitate towards their strengths and and shy away from their weaknesses. The insecure take pleasure in tearing down others to provide a boost to their own ego and station in life.
Success can be found in all walks of life. To some, being successful means achieving a PhD in physics. To others, it is being a stay at home mom who takes care of her children, home and volunteers her time for church and charity. And to others it means working in a field that they truly love, be it arts, education, industry or sports.
Who are you to judge what is worthy and what is not? That is exactly what you are doing when you denigrate sports as being "play."
Please, enlighten us all, if sports is play, what are the arts? What is music? What is acting? Are they not creative expressions that bring pleasure to both the artist as well as many other people? Is that not a worthy life in your eyes?
The happiest people that I know are people that are doing what they love and could care less about what other people think of what they do. Joy can be found in all walks of life. Open your mind and allow yourself to appreciate the joy of the athlete in the same way that you value the other people in your life, be it the artist, teacher, engineer or scientist.
Everyone has a purpose and no one should dictate to anyone else what that purpose should be. Stop judging and start appreciating people for who they are. It may help you to find the joy that you are missing in your own life.

Let's get the facts straight. First of all... the coach told the players that practice was optional IF THE GIRL'S PARENTS WERE UNABLE TO DRIVE THEM DUE TO THE WEATHER CONDITIONS. he never told them that it would be an optional practice for any other reason.... he had the team's safety in mind.... but if you can go drive to a family function, you can most certainly drive to a basketball practice. which i, like many other parents, did.
Secondly, just because your daughter has been "with the program for years" doesn't entitle her playing time. Hate to tell you, but this is high school folks and in high school you coach to WIN. you don't coach to make everyone on the team happy.. because let's face it, that will never happen.
This coach has gone far beyond what any other coach has done for the girls and to say that he has no clue is a little bit of an exaggeration. you're obviously the parent of a player who doesn't play ... or maybe ... who quit. Okay you the facts The practice was optional, her familly came up from far away to see her. The week before her great gram had a heart attack..she died the morning of practice...her grandmom (whom she spent the whole previous Sunday) had a stoke leaving her left side paralized. It was very hard to watch this strong woman in a horrible condition. Two weeks before her friend and co-worker died with friends involved.
Did you ever think that this kid decided that Yes , being with family was a need fro her that day. And she emailed him after some other player texted her to tell her he berated her at practice in front of everyone.
No the coach played every player before her and even when brought to his attention just skipped over her. Plus the fact that one day he tells her she will play JV to help out , then tells her she will only play Varsity. Tells her he was going to start her . ?????? It is also come to my attention he made remarks to her at practices which upset her.
Then when she went to him to tell her she was going home with her Mom and turning her uniform the next day He said GOOD to her. What Adult says that to a 16 year old girl? I recieved a call yesterday about this website and realized it was her you are all talking about. An Honor student a normal teenager with aspirations, an Athlete and a pretty good one. No she understood she might sit for the game. She understood the message he was sending by putting everyone else in before her. The message was that he was in power to ruin her interest and rob her of playing a sport she liked. From early years to now ask the other coaches what kind of kid she is? Bottom line she is a kid and the playing time was not the issue. The treatment by a mentor/coach was not right.

I have been very supportive of all the players throughout these years. It is very upsetting to me to have helped this kid develop her skills to have had treatment like this. Life goes on.Oh Kids do make mistakes , that is a given. It is us Adults that should realize they need our suport.

I have been following this thread for awhile, reading mainly about pros/cons of sports vs. academics. I can truly see both sides. However, the post about how this adult spoke to, and about, a teenager is upsetting. I will preface the rest of my statement by saying I have never been a coach, so I obviously don't know their perspective. However, as a teacher (and let's not beat me up on that), I do believe that any adult involved in any teenager's upbringing, whether it is a a parent, teacher, coach, or a club advisor, needs to set a positive example and nurture that individual...not try to disgrace them in public in front of their peers or the public. If there was an issure with missing practice, the coach should have spoken to the player in private. It equates to a teacher belittling a student in a classroom. Yes, adults need to talk to students/children/ players about certain issues as they arise. It helps us all teach them about accountability and responsibility. However, it could, and should, be done in privacy. There is nothing wrong with telling our youth what our expectations are of them; we can discuss it privately and with integrity. As far as turning in her uniform...if the coach really said, "Good"? That's completely unacceptable no matter what the circumstances.

Thank you. This is the issue for me. We have had most of these kids in our home throughout the
years. They are all great kids. Now they are typical teens, exploring and making choices. We adults need to always treat them with respect no matter how they affect our mood or how upset we might get at there inability at times to grasp the right road. I know a teenager in this world has so many disstractions and technology at their beckon call. We as adults are suppose to remember we were teens once and pretty much did the same things they did, some of us unfortunately are still teens.
You would think after the loss of such a wonderful young man and the loss of the Hamburg girl, we all would be finding ways to help these kids with love and compassion. Ask them questions, discuss your view(which will always differ from theirs) and maybe at some point they will agree to disagree to your face, but possibly when they are alone they will ponder your view, if only to appreciate that you took the time to talk. I mean the bottom line here is they are children and we are the adults, we only owe them some understanding and try not to be hypocrites when we catch them doing certain things. I know this Christmas was hard on a few people with the knowledge they will never get to do anything with their kid again. We have at least the time to right some things or say the things they need to hear, like we love them and want them to succeed in any endeavour. They watch us and that is how they learn. Let's show them we understand where they are in life and maybe ( juat maybe) they will think before they act.

I'm sorry that I don't know who your daughter is, but I commend you for posting this. You really should not need to give an explanation why your daughter missed one practice, especially a practice that was optional. That's ridiculous. What happened to her was terribly wrong and I'm sorry she had to go through it, especially in light of all she already was dealing with. I don't have children that play (I used to but they quit when Moll took over), but I've heard some of what is going on and its wrong. I've seen his favortism and I've heard there are players sitting that are pretty good. That's ashame. I know this is a high school program, but what does that mean. Does that mean no one but his little favorites get to play. Give the other kids a chance too. When will our athletic programs get better? Having coached at BHS 20+ years ago ,it seems that parents are too involved with sports.When your child gets to Jr. high things start to get tougher.coaches push a little harder & expect more effort. This is all part of growing up. As a coach...You keep it simple. You do not show bias toward athletes with greater ability. I learned to gain respect, you must give respect. There is a lot more coaching pride when an average athlete becomes a star, however that development requires extra attention to detail at practice not less. Let me say I know nothing about basketball.Do you quit on a kid?? never!!A kid may quit on you but you must realize that kids mature at different rates.Granted there are some real knuckle-heads in 7th grade but as they get older and wiser they eventually understood there was a method to my madness.7th grade is tough.A lot of things are changing around you and your trying to fit somewhere.Sports at this level is a stepping stone.If kids are not having fun while they are learning you will lose that kid.Grades always came first and we had guys on the team that were tutors when needed.I always told the boys if they gave me 100% at practice I'd find a way to win a match that we might lose.I never knew how I was going to do that but luckily I did at least once a season.I always told parents my job was to help get these boys ready for high school and if they had concerns to call me.I had 1 or 2 that called but for the most part I was lucky enough to win 80% of the time and parents are not that upset when things go well and the kids have fun.the joke among the boys was always " winning isn't everything but losing sucks!"

Yes, I actually do. It's called player rotation, and it prevents the same girls from getting exhausted and even more prone to injuries. They get to rethink plays, talk with the coach and get ready to be put back in. Meanwhile some new blood gets to gel with the players already on the court and new talent is explored, playing experience is gained, and a TEAM plays. It might be hard to fathom, but there are different coaching styles. And yours might not be the only one to be effective. Think outside your little box.

This is not a b-ball issue but the AD has hinted toward eliminating per diem pay for coaches.That would mean a coach would not get paid once the regular season is over.The reward for success would be to coach for free.This would be a slap in the face to Roach,Pienta,etc.

Agree with your assessment. This site is pathetic. As a father whose kids attended Brandywine many years ago, I am thuroughly embarrassed. This is high school basketball. Having been to a couple games this year, there is a disturbing lack of talent evaluation from parents who feel their kids are great. Certain things are not for everyone, and no one should be entitled playing time for any reason. You earn playing time. I've been to many of the girls basketball games this year and the problem I see is that parents can't admit that their daughters are not as good of a player as some of the other girls. Players are not "entitled" to equal playing time at this level (not even at the MS level). Anyone who knows anything about basketball knows you play your five best players and spot sub the other girls as needed. Coach Moll did that in every game. What more do you want?

If a pitcher is that good, you could put a little league team behind them and they could still win. Goes for both Baseball and Softball, but softball for the most part can be more dominated by one pitcher. Hence why she pitched almost every game for her entire high school career....the same cannot be said for the State Champ baseball team.
Also, I am taking nothing away from the other girls on the team, they all contributed in their own way.
All this aside, Alyssa had one of the best high school careers in the county ever...note I said one of. But let's not appoint the coach a god yet, until we see how the teams do with a less dominant pitcher and have to play more of a team game and coaching decisions play into it.

The current fees for the soccer club cover the cost to play year per player. The money in the club was from previous boards charging higher fees than now and spending less on the kids than it cost the player. Come to a meeting and discuss with the board and I am sure they will be glad to explain it to you. Give the new board credit for not raising fees and just spending the money that was raised this year.

As a parent of student/youth athletes let me say this. My children are fortunate because they do get a lot of playing time. They all play 3 sports and play well. I am not bragging. They work hard at their sports and have fun playing. They also have some natural talent (defintely not received from me). My point is, as a parent and member of the community, we need to go out and support all of these atheletes and coaches. It does not matter if we have a child that plays or child that does not get as much play time. That child that is on the bench, is just as important as the one that is on the field. They put in just as much time and maybe even more time and effort because it comes a little harder for them or perhaps they are just learning the sport. I enjoy watching all of the athletes play and do their best. As members of the community, we need to go out and support our teams. The local support for the teams is awful. I think you're being a little harsh and the other poster wasn't specific enough. If we're talking about little league, I somewhat agree with you, although I like to watch a little league game from time to time. However, if we are talking about middle and high school sports, it is a good thing to support the games whether you have a student athlete in them or not. The same goes for concerts, plays, the Minstrel Show, art exhibitions, etc.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do go to concerts and other school and youth events including music, cheerleading, sports, that my children do not attend when we have time. My kids and I enjoy watching and supporting their friends. Their friends also come to their events. Youth sports are different than school sports. When we put a school team on the court/field it should be the best players that we have. We should play to win. Just as if you were going to a band competition, you would put your best musicians there to compete. When you are looking at youth sports, there are different levels of competion. There are club levels and then there are travel levels. At all levels you want the children to excel. All teams should play to do their best, travel/tournament teams and school teams should not only play to do their best, but also to win, but NOT at any cost. The most important commodity is the player. My son had a great youth baseball coach. He was there because he wanted to be and enjoyed coaching the players. His son was not best athelete out there, and he did not showcase him. He got fair playing time. He did, however, expect one thing from each player...participation, a positive attitude, and improvement.

The quitting kids are definitely an issue. That is and will continue to be an issue that occurs in any and all programs. Deeper issues reside here that also need to be addressed. The evidence should be clear that this program is headed in the wrong direction. The coach is working over an hour away. He is only available for open gyms Saturday mornings. He is not available for the team camp. His assistants do not attend open gyms, summer games or team camp. He does not have a JV team playing this summer. If there is a junior high team playing this summer it is a scrapped together team of 7th and 8th graders combined. He started 4 juniors on JV last year and sat his freshmen and sophomores. These are large issues. He is not developing his kids, building the foundation of a program. He and his staff need to commit to being able to invest their time into this program. The program requires a commitment beyond the November-February time frame. And NO I am not upset over my childs playing time. She is playing the time she deserves.

Brandywine Basketball has been going downhill since Terry Sittler and Scott Heiter left. Despite the wonderful volunteers in the youth programs, the MS and HS level has deterred so many young athletes from developing to their full potential. The positive flip is that these ex-athletes have moved on to find themselves excel in other sports and/or activities. However, there is no tenure for coaches and if they don't develop their programs, then it is time for someone else to have the opportunity to step up and give the kids a chance to be the best that they can be. Sad to say but these 2 2009/2010 basketball coaches have not helped the sport at Brandywine. Both of the coaches started juniors on a jv squad, which did not develop the younger talent and many chose to leave after their freshmen or sophomore year. It doesn't make them bad people, just bad coaches. So, yes, the AD needs to evaluate his coaches and do what's right for the student athletes and provide them with a coach that is present, knowledgable and truly cares about the kids. Large egos need not apply.

A great job????? I'm not sure how long Coach Moll has been here but the once strong girls basketball program has not finished above .500 in years. If you're the type of person who is ok with mediocrity then I guess you could say great job, but you really should set your standards for a GREAT job a little higher than mediocre.

Of the girls who have "quit", I know of several that played on AAU teams during the off-season and on Moll's summer league teams AND attended numerous basketball camps in the off-season. Is there anything else that these girls could have done? They EXCEL in other sports and are true academic athletes, yet he ran them off. So please explain your point! This isn't a Bobby Knight that chased off the girls due to scare tactics. This is just someone who does not know the game, has favorites and is a cheerleader on the sidelines. He picks his parents and stars and relies on them. Well, we can see where that is getting him. So, let's go for team coach who knows the game and develops and coaches his players and keeps the parents completely out of the picture.

I noticed that there were many coaching openings in the school district. Unfortunately, girls high school basketball was not one of them. So it looks as though he's back. Why cant they get a coach who at least has a clue about the game? Another wonderful seaon to look forward to.
